Dear Gardening Friend,
I hope all is well
with you, and you have thawed out, and dried off from our unpredictable
Chicago area Spring weather. Warm one day -rain, snow, or hail
the next. It's always a surprise.
Speaking of surprises,
Mother's Day is May 11, 2008 (this Sunday), and we at Clover's
have been gathering up some amazing pre-planted pots, gorgeous
gift plants, an abundance of hanging baskets, and of course a
wide selection of annual flowers, vegetables, and herbs, too!
All would make excellent choices for Mom.
Although, if you can't
decide what Mom would like best, we always have gift certificates
available for purchase as well. Personally, I would love an "Endless
Summer" hydrangea from Monrovia - flowers for Mom (me) all
summer. Not to mention, that an endless summer would be quite
the "happy thought" for me after our long winter this
year.
Gardener
in May::
Early spring flowering
deciduous shrubs such as Forsythias, Spiraea, and Weigela, should
be pruned when they have just finished blooming, as they set their
buds for next Spring in late summer and fall
Plant your summer flowering
bulbs - dahlias, cannas, gladiolas, tuberous begonias, and lilies
Set stakes next to
your tall flowering plants in preparation for supporting them
as they grow
Get all your cold hardy
annuals, vegetables, herbs, and perennials planted
Wait until mid-May
or late-May to plant cold sensitive plants like sweet potato vine,
zinnias, ageratum, impatiens, and marigolds. If you are not sure
if a plant is cold sensitive, ask your friendly Clover's Garden
Center staff for advice. We are always ready to help you.
We

Pink
or Blue::
Soon-to-be moms (and
dads) ponder this question, and so do gardeners.
This is always the
question, when discussing hydrangea macrophylla. Here is the answer-
work lime into the
soil around your plant for pink blooms
work aluminum sulphate
around your plant for blue
n.b. This hydrangea
is only hardy to zone 8, and we in Chicagoland are zone 5.
We look forward to
seeing you soon!
Sincerely,
Clover's Garden Girl
